• Elder Abuse Discussion – run by Dr. Nancy Giunta, Silberman School of Social Work, Hunter College CUNY
O Referred to assigned videos about elder abuse
o Elder Abuse facts
 Elderjusticenow.org
 Refers to intentional or neglectful acts by a caregiver or trusted individual that lead to or may lead to harm of a vulnerable elder
 11% of Americans over age 60 have experienced some form of elder abuse in the past year
• Embarrassed, afraid of independence being taken away, “make sure my children don’t find out”
• Tension between concerns at keeping someone safe & their need for autonomy (fear vs independence)
 Almost 90% of elder abuse and neglect occurs with a known perpetrator such as a family member and 2/3rds of perpetrators are adult children or spouses
 Risk of death is 300x greater for elders who have been mistreated compared with those who haven’t been mistreated
 Most at risk are those with small social networks
o Signs
 When older adults are not allowed to be alone with other people (power and control)
 Limited access to info, people, resources they should have access to
 Change in someone’s typical demeanor: outgoing->reclusive or vice versa
 Bills not being paid, regular withdrawals
o Joan’s story from a previous ARTCART
 Artist in late 60’s, working partner in 50’s, had a close personal relationship. He had a criminal background; she mentored him, almost a surrogate mother. He was very proprietary with the software; she didn’t know what was going on, fellows couldn’t find out what was organized where. He would never leave her alone with anyone else, very controlling, not sure if financial abuse too, no way of knowing, very disturbing to everyone, found out in middle of spring and couldn’t do anything about it. Come to Joan or Pat with any concerns or suspicions as soon as possible.
o APS (Adult Protective Services)
 Offices in every county nationwide
 Aps serves all adults 18+ who are considered “vulnerable” and at risk of experiencing abuse
